What is Endodontics?

The endodontic

The endodontic specialty covers all procedures aimed at preventing and curing the spread of infection through the tooth to surrounding tissues (bones, sinuses, etc.).

This mainly includes diagnosis, keeping the pulp of the tooth alive, endodontic treatment or retreatment (devitalization) and endodontic surgery.

Endodontic Treatment

Endodontic

New biological advances allow us today to offer solutions for preserving tooth pulp in the living state with a better success rate than ever before.

In certain specific situations (bulky caries, trauma), devitalization can be avoided if the indication allows it. The tooth pulp is then protected with a biocompatible material that will allow it to be strengthened and survived.

If the pulp of the tooth cannot be kept alive or if it is already necrotic, it should be removed, the interior of the tooth (canals) disinfected and sealed. This is endodontic treatment, commonly called devitalization, which stops or prevents contamination of the supporting tissues of the tooth.

Apical Endodontic Surgery

Endodontic surgery (apical resection) is then presented as a remedy to preserve the tooth and its possible prosthesis (crown or bridge) while treating the lesion in order to obtain healing of the bone.

It can be considered as an endodontic retreatment but performed by another route of passage requiring the realization of a surgical access.
