The retina is a thin layer of tissue that covers the back of the eye. It transmits light information to the brain, with the help of the optic nerve, so that the latter perceives the images. So when a detachment occurs, the retina stops functioning properly and cannot transmit light to the brain in the normal way. Depending on the severity of the detachment, an affected person may have severe vision loss.

Retinal detachment is a serious condition that requires prompt treatment.

When the tear is made, the treatment is only surgical.

The operation consists of creating adherent scars between the retina and the choroid by means of laser photocoagulation or cryosurgery. Pre and postoperative immobilization is necessary.

The operation can be performed by loco-regional anesthesia (in 90% of cases) or by general anesthesia. Complications from the operation are rare and difficult to predict.
